NYC Day #1 Sunday

Our trip began with a 2 1/2 hour drive to the airport. Everything went smoothly, but I must say that I think it is ridiculous they want you to pay extra for ALL the bags you check. I think you should be allowed at least one for free. We flew to Charlotte, NC where our plane was delayed due to a bad starter valve. Yikes!

Isn't this sky gorgeous! I had a little flight anxiety, but playing Phase 10 helped calm my nerves. The runway for LaGuardia began in the water (that was a little freaky) and we saw a blimp in the sky.

This was our first NYC taxi experience. Our driver was very nice and had lived in the city for 52 years. Good luck pronouncing his name! I guarantee his friends give him a nickname. LOL!

I loved my first glimpse of the city. On the way to the hotel we saw Mont Blanc, Prada, Versace, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, etc. I was so excited! I couldn't believe I was there! Our cab ride was $25 plus tip.

We stayed at the Salisbury Hotel. It was a great location. Our room was a suite with a kitchenette and living room. We had lots of room. Lil Sis and BIL were already there when we arrived. My BIL's sis stayed with us for 3 nights too.

After getting settled at the hotel we headed for the subway. I highly suggest the MetroCard. It is $25 and you get unlimited rides for a week. Very economical! The subways are smelly (like trash and metal) and very hot (No AC). You also get to see lots of DIFFERENT people (like a transvestite). Most do not make eye contact.

We took the subway to the Empire State Building. The view was great! Below is a photo of the tip top while on the observation platform (86th Floor).

We ate dinner at Lombardi's Pizzeria in Little Italy. It was the first US pizzeria and the pizza was YUMMY. We walked alot. We saw lots of trash on the sidewalks. We saw (and smelled)homeless people sleeping in boxes and corners of buildings. It was very sad and humbling. You could smell them before you could see them. We gave our leftover pizza to a homeless man pushing a shopping cart on our way back to the hotel.

We flew with US Airways. They just changed their policy! We got one for free because we booked before July 9th. Other people were not so lucky. That stinks!
